Storyboard

This is our inital storyboard for the creation of our teaser trailer.

Storyboard - attempt 1

We decided to try using Pixton to create the storyboard for our teaser trailer. However, when we tried to use the website we found it difficult to use and the above two frames took us a considerable period of time. As a result, we decided that it would be best to stay with traditional media techniques to create our storyboard. Another issue with the website was the inability to create a storyboard with more than six frames.

Research into action teaser trailers

Inception

Very limited information about the plot of the film is given away within the trailer, it is left up to the audience to try and guess what it is about - tempting them into watching the film to find out.  It instead it focuses on getting the audience interested in the film through using interesting special effects, camera shots and music. It is short in length at just over 1 minute. This is another trailer we have looked at that features captions, though this time stating the actor’s name (Leonardo Dicaprio – Star) rather than commentary on the film plot.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

The trailer again features text on screen that asks rhetorical questions such as “How do you find an enemy that is hidden?” drawing in the viewer’s interest to finding out more about the film. It includes a variety of camera angles to draw attention to certain important elements in the scene, through close-ups etc. The trailer seems to stick to two limited colour palettes: blue/grey and brown/black, which may be setting the tone for the film.

Paranormal Activity 2

The trailer features a limited soundtrack which includes just screaming and the occasional loud bang. This helps to create the tension and excitement that are a part of the promoting the film. The loud noises provide the feeling of fear for the audience that appeals to the right type of audience for the film. The trailer uses darker tones for the colour scheme, mostly blue and black, which adds to the feeling of loneliness. It is short in length at just 1 minute and 13 seconds, It attracts attention with words on screen referencing the first film which appeals to alredy secured fans of the original.

Final Destination 5

At 2 minutes long we feel it is quite dragged out and showed too many scenes from the film. It didn’t give too much away about the actual plot of the film, but the previous films in the series mean the audience already know what to expect. The trailer features tense music building up to a crescendo. It Also has captions on screen, which seems to be a typical convention of most teaser trailers we have watched.

Research into comedy teaser trailers

Mean Girls

'

There is music throughout that links the individual scenes together within the trailer. It features a lot of audio in the form of music and sound from the scenes within the trailer, but no voiceover. It lasts for a long time, 2 minutes 32 seconds, and we feel that it explains a lot of the plot and may give away too much of the film. This may make it a less successful teaser trailer because it feels like it’s excessively long and it gives away too much of the plot.

Easy A

Throughout the whole teaser trailer, limited information revealed to the viewer in terms of plot, themes etc. The film is clearly shown to be a comedy through humorous scenes, bright mise-en-scene and upbeat music used. Music is played throughout the trailer with occasional additional sound effects, e.g. birds tweeting, shower, and also occasional speech from within the scene. The film title and release date shown at the end on a plain black background to make it stand out.

The Inbetweeners (TV series)

Contrapuntal, non-diegetic music is used throughout the trailer. There are no captions, which is different to the film trailers we have watched, suggesting the conventions are different for TV Trailers. Because of this, we are not going to watch and analyse any more trailers for TV shows etc, and stay strictly to film.

Timeline

Before we started any work on our actual product, we wanted to plan the creation processs and discuss how we will plan our time effectively. Here, we have used 'timetoast.com' to create a timeline of events we will be carrying out over the next few months.
